Silver

by Frankie Ann Smythe

To my dear Brandon

On August 1st I took your name when I became your wife
For 25 years, I’ve held your hand as we’ve traveled thru this life
The roses were red on our wedding day in a beautiful, peaceful place
We had no idea the roads we would walk as we smiled at each other’s face

Not long after that, we found our home—the place where we would live
For 25 years, God’s kept us safe as he gives and gives and gives
The month was November when we moved in; 2 dogs, 2 cats and a stove
We came with our hopes and with hidden things too—big things we needed to know

Long before we met, we each had a dream of having a family to love
For 25 years, the Lord has been here and his angels watch us from above
After 4 years, when our baby was born, he was tiny and precious and true
The things that he said, the things that he did, looked a whole lot like you (and me too)

The holidays came and the holidays went, filled with fear and strife and pain
For 25 years, we’ve kept the feasts—but, oh, how they did change
We walked the way they told us to walk, for the years we were bound in chains
And then one day, we left that road and we’ve never been the same

God shined the light on the long-hidden things—about them, about you, about me
For 25 years, he’s been holding our hands and teaching our eyes to see
He gave us each other, he gave us our son, and he gave us dear friends to love too
The love and the trust that he grew in our hearts gave much healing to me and to you

As we celebrate this day—the one they call Silver—I’m wondering what lies ahead
For 25 years, I’ve read the good book and I’ve prayed to my Lord in my head
He tells me—Be at peace; cast away every fear; remember the words from of old
Today brings new things and so will tomorrow as you journey each step to the gold
